Donald E. "Toly" Tolonen, Jr.

     Donald E. "Toly" Tolonen, Jr., 49, of Zeba, passed into the spirit world, Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005, at Baraga County Memorial Hospital, following a "warrior’s" battle with cancer and was surrounded by his loving family.
     A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday in the Most Holy Name of Jesus Church in Assinins. Rev. George Maki officiated. Interment will be in the Pinery Cemetery in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be directed to Donald's family.

Gerald I. “Jerry” Lytikainen

     Gerald I. “Jerry” Lytikainen, 67, of L'Anse, passed away Friday, Dec. 30, 2005 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness. 
     A memorial service for Mr. Lytikainen will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2006 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse with Pastor Scott Williams officiating. Spring interment will take place on the family lot in the Keweenaw Bay Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 6 p.m. until time of the service. Following the service the family invites friends to join them for fellowship and refreshments in the Harrington Gathering room, located at the funeral home.

Violet Hakola

     Violet Hakola, 78, of Baraga, died on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2006, at her home. 
     A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2006 at 2 p.m. in the Jacobson Funeral Home with Rev. Judy Mattson officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service. Interment will take place in the Pelkie Cemetery in the spring.

John W. Maki

     John W. Maki, age 86 of L’Anse passed away on Friday, Dec. 23, 2005, at the DJ Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette. 
     Visitation was held on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Jacobson Funeral Home. A funeral service followed at 1 p.m. in the funeral home. Following the service the Baraga County Area Veterans will perform military honors. Interment will be in the L’Anse Evergreen Cemetery in the spring.

Thomas C. Blair

     Thomas C. Blair, age 59, of Ishpeming, passed away Sunday, Dec. 18, 2005 at the Marquette General Hospital, where he had been a patient for one week, following a battle with cancer for the past year.
     Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 23, 2005, at the Bethel Baptist Church 829 Grove St. in Marquette with Pastor Brian Oberg and Pastor Hank Steede officiating. Burial with Military Honors will he held at the Ishpeming Cemetery.
     Friends may call the Bjork and Zhulkie Funeral Home at 400 N. Third St., Ishpeming on Thursday, Dec. 22. 2005 from 5 - 8 p.m.
Pallbearers will be players from the L’Anse JV Girls Basketball Team.

Priscilla Z. Tahtinen

     Priscilla Z. Tahtinen, 86, of Baraga, passed away Monday, Dec. 19, 2005, at Baraga County Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient for five days. 
     A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 22, 2005, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Baraga with Father Augustin George, Celebrant. Family members will serve as casket escorts. Spring interment will take place in the Baraga Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2005, from 6-8 p.m. at Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse and for one hour prior to the Mass at church on Thursday. A parish prayer service will be held Wednesday evening in the funeral chapel at 7 p.m. Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse, has been entrusted with the arrangements. Richard August Burke

     Richard August Burke, 59 of Nisula, passed away Thursday, Dec. 9 in Green Bay, after fighting a battle with cancer for a year and a half. 
     A Memorial service was held Monday, Dec. 12, 2005, at the Cane Funeral Home Pastor Howard Neider officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Ontonagon County Veterans Association. Burial will be in the spring at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Greenland.

Mr. John F. Freitag

     Mr. John F. Freitag, 80 of Johannesburg died Saturday, Dec. 10, 2005 at Otsego Memorial Hospital. 
     Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005 at 11 a.m. from St. Mary Cathedral, Rev. John McCracken officiating. Burial will take place at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Johannesburg. Visitation was held on Tuesday from 3-8 p.m. and at the cathedral on Wednesday beginning at 10 a.m. The rosary will be offered at 4 pm. Tuesday at the funeral home.

 John F. Knapp Sr

     John F. Knapp Sr., 70 years old passed away on Nov. 27, 2005, at the Christian Park Village in Escanaba. 
     Memorial Services were held Monday night Nov. 28, 2005 at the Jacobson Funeral Home in L’Anse. At John’s request his ashes will be placed in Alaska.

Bonnie Mae Perry

     Bonnie Mae Perry, age 86 a longtime Imperial Heights resident, passed away Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005 at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising where she had been a resident for the past year.
     Funeral services were held at noon on Monday, Dec. 12, 2005 at Woodland United Methodist Church in Michigamme with Rev. James Fegan officiating. Burial will be at Northland Chapel Gardens.

Rose F. Clisch

     Rose F. Clisch, 93, of Baraga, passed away Saturday, Dec. 10, 2005, at Baraga County Memorial Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit, L’Anse following a lengthy illness. 
     A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Baraga with Bishop James Garland, Celebrant, Fr. Norm, and Father Augustin George, along with the Marquette Diocesan priests con-celebrating. Spring interment will take place in the Baraga Cemetery. The Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse has been entrusted with funeral arrangements.

     Raymond J. Heinonen, 91, of Baraga, passed away Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005 at Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette following a lengthy illness.

     Donald “Ziffel” Allen, 49 of Kenton, went home to his lord after a long, courageous battle with cancer on Friday, Dec. 9, 2005. 
     Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. EST on Monday, Dec. 12, 2005, at the Wandersee Funeral Home in Bruce Crossing with the Rev. David Weber officiating. Interment will be in the Kenton Cemetery.

George “Glen” Sands

     George “Glen” Sands, 85, of L’Anse, died Thursday morning, Dec. 1, 2005, at his home, surrounded by his family. 
     Visitation was held on Sunday, Dec. 4, 2005 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Jacobson Funeral Home. A parish prayer service was held at 7 p.m. followed by the Baraga Area Veterans at 7:30 p.m. and Knights of Columbus at 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday, Dec. 5, 2005 at 11 a.m. in the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church with Rev. Augustine George officiating. Visitation was held on Monday, in the church, and for one hour prior to the mass. Interment will be in the L’Anse Evergreen Cemetery in the spring. 
     Mr. Sands’ grandsons served as pallbearers.

Lester Clarence Miron

      Lester Clarence Miron, 91, of Baraga, died Sunday morning, Dec. 4, 2005, at Baraga County Memorial Hospital's Skilled Nursing Unit in L'Anse.
     Visitation was held on Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2005 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. in St. Ann's Catholic Church in Baraga. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the church with Rev. George Maki officiating. Interment will be in the Baraga Cemetery in the spring.

Wallace Edward “Soupy” Paquette

     Wallace Edward “Soupy” Paquette, 79, of Skanee, died Sunday evening, Nov. 27, 2005, at Baraga County Memorial Hospital. 
     A celebration of life luncheon will be held at 11 a.m. in the Jacobson Funeral Home with Rev. Augustine George to give the blessing. Interment will be in the L’Anse Evergreen Cemetery in the spring.

Marlene Shirley Marie Maki Wood

     Marlene Shirley Marie Maki Wood, 70, of Longwood Manor, Maytown, PA, and formerly of Brighton, MI, passed away Thursday, Nov. 24, 2005, in the Lancaster Hospital, Lancaster, PA.
     Funeral services were held on Monday, Nov. 28, 2005, at 4 p.m. in the Evangelical Free Church of Hershey, 300 Hilltop Road, Hershey, PA, with Pastor Gary T. Lathrop officiating. Interment will be in the Covington Cemetery, at a later date.
     In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, c/o Development Office, 4100 John R., Detroit, MI 48201.

Ilmi Helen Niemi

     Ilmi Helen Niemi, 86, of Baraga, died Friday evening, Nov. 25, 2005, at Bayside Village in L'Anse.
     A funeral service was held on Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2005, at Jacobson Funeral Home. Pastor Judy Mattson officiated. Interment was in the Covington Cemetery.

Robert “Bob” Sohlden

     Robert “Bob” Sohlden 82, a resident of Birch Grove in Hancock passed in to eternal life with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday evening Nov. 23, 2005 with his family at his side. 
     Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 26, 2005, at Bethany Baptist Church in Dollar Bay with the Rev. Brian Knight officiating.

     Helen M. Hollon, 66, of L’Anse passed away Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2005, at her home following a courageous battle with cancer.

     Lauretta Sliger, 93 of Trout Creek, died on Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005 at her home. 
     Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. EST on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2005 at the First Presbyterian Church in Trout Creek with Dawn Treado officiating. Interment was in the Trout Creek Cemetery. Friends called on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. EST at the Wandersee Funeral Home in Bruce Crossing and for an hour before the service at the church on Saturday.

Leonard Anthos

     Leonard Anthos, age 85, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005, at the Long Prairie Memorial Nursing Home in Long Prairie.
     A Funeral Mass was held for Leonard on Monday, Oct. 31, 2005 at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Clarissa with Father John Caskey presiding. Pallbearers were Bob Johnson, Jim Krueger, Ken Barlow and Larry Johnson. Military Honors were provided by members of the Minnesota National Guard. Interment was in the St. Joseph’s Cemetery at Clarissa.

Melvin G. “Mel” Clem

     Melvin G. “Mel” Clem, 76, of Baraga passed away Monday evening, Nov. 7, 2005 at his residence surrounded by his family. 
     Funeral services for Mr. Clem will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, 2005 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse with Father George Maki officiating. Interment will take place in the Baraga Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, Nov. 11, 2005 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse from 6 until 8 p.m. and for one hour prior to the services on Saturday. A military service is tentatively scheduled Friday evening, followed by a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. in the funeral chapel.

Naomi J. “Tiny” Ekdahl

     Naomi J. “Tiny” Ekdahl, 81, of L’Anse, died on Friday, Oct. 28, 2005, in the company of her family in Michigamme, following a short illness. 
      Funeral services for Ekdahl were held on Monday, Oct. 31, 2005, at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse with Father Augustin George officiating. Interment took place in the L’Anse Evergreen Cemetery. Erik, Greg, and Andrew Ekdahl, Mike Kujansuu, Matt Hiitola and Paul Haara honored her as casket escorts.

Arlen E. Ingram

     Arlen E. Ingram, 72, died on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2005.
     Ingram is survived by his wife, Kathryn; children, Sherrie (Dr. James) Setterberg, Lance (Susan) Ingram, Craig (Laura) Ingram, Dr. Todd (Susan) Ingram, Kelly (Charles) Robbins and Denise (Anthony) DiLisi. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren; and two brothers, Ronald and Norman Ingram. 
     Visitation will be on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2005, at the Northrop-Sassaman Funeral Home, 19091 Northville Road, Northville, MI. Scripture service is on Thursday evening, visitation on Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church until time of Mass at 11 a.m.

John “Jack” F. Gough

     John “Jack” F. Gough of Renton, WA, died on Aug. 28, 2005, in Kent. He was 86.
     A graveside service was held on Oct. 4, 2005, at Tahoma National Cemetery in Maple Valley. Memorials may be made to the donor’s favorite charity. Arrangements were by Cady Cremation Services in Kent.

     Edith Agnes Almli, 93, of L’Anse, died on Friday evening, Oct. 28, 2005, at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.
     A memorial service was held on Monday, Oct. 31, 2005, at United Lutheran Church. Rev. Scott Williams officiated. Interment will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2005 at 10 a.m. in L’Anse Evergreen Cemetery.

     Victory A. “Vicki” Mleko, 61, of L’Anse and Vero Beach, FL, died on Sunday, Oct. 23, 2005, at her daughter’s home in Vero Beach, FL.

     Keith Karinen, 59, of Askel Location, died on Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 18, 2005 at his home, with his family by his side, following a lengthy illness.

     Hugh J. Fisher, 83, of L'Anse, died suddenly on Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2005, at Baraga County Memorial Hospital, L'Anse.

Robert William "Bill" Corgan

     Robert William "Bill" Corgan, 82, of Minneapolis, died on Sunday, Oct. 9, 2005.

     Louise Amans, age 84 of Milford, died on Thursday, Oct. 13, 2005. Wife of the late Lloyd E. mother of Ronald (Gloria) Amans, Judith (David) Derby, Karen (David) Borlace and Robert (Deborah) Amans. Grandmother of eight and great grandmother of five. Sister of Cleo Neynabor and Richard and Robert Ingalls.

     Dehannah Rhee Pelto of Baraga, died on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2005, in Gaylord, MI. after being struck by a motor vehicle while walking to work. She was 22 years old.

     Elsie Impi Keranen, 93, a former Baraga resident, died at Bayside Village in L'Anse, on Sunday morning, Sept. 25, 2005, where she had been a resident the past 7 ½ weeks following a nine month stay at the Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming.

     Sharon M. Jarvi, 55, of Keweenaw Bay, died unexpectedly, on Monday morning, Sept. 19, 2005, at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.

     James F. “Jim” Vizina of Haines City, FL, died Monday, Sept. 19, 2005. He was born in Baraga July 12, 1942, the son of Lawrence and Madeline Vizina.

     Helen Amelia Tollefson Duncan, age 93, of Minneapolis, MN died peacefully of old age on Sept. 20, 2005, at the St. Anthony Health Care Center, St. Anthony, MN.

     Elsie Impi Keranen, 93, a former Baraga resident, died at Bayside Village in L'Anse, on Sunday morning, Sept. 25, 2005, where she had been a resident the past 7-1/2 weeks following a 9-month stay at the Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming.

     Forrest L. Pitcher, 96, of Plymouth, MI, and formerly of Covington, died on April 30, 2005. He and his wife, Elvie, retired to Covington in the 1980’s. While they lived in this area they attended L’Anse Baptist Church.

Edna Soli Martinson and Verner Soli

Two former Pequaming natives have died. They are the daughter and son of the late Arndt and Johanna Soli. Edna (Soli) Martinson, 87, of Marquette and Madison, WI died on March 11, 2005. She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore, in 1998. She is survived by two daughters.
Verner Soli, 79, of Northville, MI died on May 16, 2005. Surviving are his wife, Janice and his five children. Both Edna and Verner are also survived by two sisters, Marie Hietala of L’Anse and Ethel Coldwell of L’Anse and two brothers Donald (Shirley) Soli of Aura and John (Carol) Gustafson of Life Lake, MI

     Glenn Walitalo, 48, of Arnheim, died early Tuesday morning at his home.

     Evert R. Hakala, 75, a resident of the Otter Lake District died early on Wednesday morning, April 6, 2005, at DJ Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette, where he had been a resident patient for the past three weeks.

     Jean P. Meyer, age 82 of Mendon died on Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo, MI. She was born in Pequaming on Aug. 12, 1922, the daughter of Thomas and Julia (Almli) Lofquist, and graduated from L’Anse High School in 1940. 
     Cremation has been conducted. An Eastern Star service was held on March 5, 2005, at Eickhoff Funeral Home in Mendon immediately followed by funeral services with Rev. Ward Pierce, Pastor of the Mendon and West Mendon United Methodist Churches, officiating. A private interment of her ashes will take place later in Laird Cemetery. Memorial donations are suggested to the Mendon Public Library.

     Jean A. Maki, 74, formerly of Sheboygan, WI died early Saturday evening, Feb. 26, 2005, at Sheboygan Progressive Care Center where she had been a resident the past four and a half years.

James Supanich

     James Supanich, 71, of Shelby Township, and a summer-time resident of L’Anse, died on Jan. 26, 2005.
     Mass was celebrated at St. Therese of Lisieux, Shelby Township, MI, on Jan. 29, 2005. Burial will be in the L’Anse Evergreen Cemetery in the spring.

Karen Tollefson

     Karen Tollefson, age 48, died in Livonia, MI, on Jan. 30, 2005. 
     A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at Harry J. Will Funeral Home, Livonia. Interment will take place at Parkview Memorial Cemetery. 

Michael Jon Kantola

     Michael Jon Kantola, 23, of Negaunee, died on Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at his residence.

     Olga S. Erickson, age 99, formerly of Keweenaw Bay, died on Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, in Fullerton, CA.

Arne W. Takalo

     Arne W. Takalo, 85, of Baraga, died on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005, at Baraga County Memorial Hospital, L’Anse. 
     A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Baraga with Father Chacko, celebrant. Spring interment will take place in the Pelkie Cemetery. Baraga County area veterans under the direction of the Baraga American Legion Post 444 conducted military honors on Friday, Jan. 21 followed by a parish prayer service.

Raymond E. McDonald

     Raymond E. McDonald, 82, of L’Anse and Harlingen, TX, died on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005, at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, TX.  
     A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, L’Anse with Father Chacko, celebrant. The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse and for one hour prior to the Mass at church on Saturday. Baraga County Area Veterans, under the direction of the Baraga American Legion Post 444 will conduct a military service at 6:30 p.m., Friday evening followed by a rosary service at 7 p.m. conducted by the Knights of Columbus.      David D. Clisch, 94, of Baraga, died on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, at Baraga County Memorial Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit following a lengthy illness. 
     A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Baraga. Father Norm Clisch will be the celebrant and Father Chacko will con-celebrate. Spring interment will take place in the Baraga Cemetery, and his grandchildren will honor him as casket bearers.      Vieno S. Lindgren-Prost, 72, of Baraga, died on Thursday evening, Jan. 13, 2005, at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.

Mary M. Lindemann

     Mary M. Lindemann, 85, of L’Anse died on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005, at Baraga County Memorial Hospital’s Skilled Nursing Unit following a lengthy illness. 
     A memorial service for Lindemann was held on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse, with Father Chacko officiating. The Baraga American Legion Post 444 Auxiliary conducted a memorial service.

Nelda D. (Steele) Saarinen

     Nelda D. (Steele) Saarinen of Wild Rose, WI, age 68, died on Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton, WI, after a two month effort to recover from by-pass surgery. 
     A memorial service was held on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at the Shepherd of The Lakes Church in Waupaca, WI, with Reverends Dean Wheeler and David Martin, officiating. The Holly Funeral Home of Waupaca, WI assisted the family with arrangements.

Jacob Richard Wickstrom

     Jacob Richard Wickstrom, newborn son of Richard and Marianne (Morin) Wickstrom of L’Anse, died on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at Portage Health System.
     Private funeral services were held at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. Internment will take place in the spring in the L’Anse Evergreen Cemetery. 

Jerome D. Morin

     Jerome D. Morin, age 86 of L’Anse, died on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at Westside Residential Care where he resided. 
     There will be no visitation or funeral service. Internment will take place in the spring in the L’Anse Evergreen Cemetery. Jacobson Funeral Home in L’Anse is in charge of arrangements. 

George Walter Kahkonen

George Walter Kahkonen, 83, of Warren, MI, and formerly of Westland, MI, died on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, in Ferndale, MI. 
Kahkonen was born on Jan. 12, 1921, in Pelkie.  A service was conducted for Kahkonen on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at Spaulding Funeral Home, Ferndale, with burial at Memphis Cemetery, Memphis, MI. 

Hanna J. Anderson

     Hanna J. Anderson, 72, of Pelkie, died early Sunday morning, Jan. 9, 2005, at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.
     A gathering in celebration of Anderson’s life will be held at the Lakeside Inn on Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, at 1 p.m.

     James McCart, 77, of Florence, WI, died on Dec. 30, 2004, at the VA Regional Medical Center in Iron Mountain, following a lengthy illness.

John “Jack” M. Novak

     John “Jack” M. Novak, 79, of L’Anse, Michigan, died at his home, Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004. 
     Visitation will be held on Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Jacobson Funeral Home. A parish prayer service will be recited at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at 11 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Fr. Chacko celebrating. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to the mass in the church. Interment will be in the Skanee Cemetery in the spring.
